AI Assistants Are Recommending Local Businesses. Are They Finding You?

A new layer of discovery sits on top of search, and it reads your website to answer questions.

More and more customers are skipping the list of blue links entirely. They ask an AI assistant for a recommendation — the best late-night mechanic nearby, a dentist that takes their insurance, somewhere to eat with a patio — and act on the handful of names it gives back.

Those answers are assembled from sources: your website, your listings, your reviews, and directories that mention you. If your details are thin, outdated, or inconsistent across those places, you simply do not get included in the answer.

The good news is that being easy for an AI to understand is largely the same work as being easy for a human to understand. Write in plain, specific language. Name your services literally instead of using clever labels. State your city and service area in text, not only inside an image.

Answer real questions directly on the page. Do you offer free estimates? Are you open Sunday? Do you serve gluten-free options? Do you take walk-ins? A short, clearly worded answer is exactly the kind of thing that gets quoted back to a customer.

Consistency across the web matters more than ever. Same business name, same address, same phone, same hours everywhere you appear. Contradictory information makes a source unreliable, and unreliable sources get left out.

None of this requires chasing a trend. Keep an accurate, well-written website and complete listings, and you show up wherever people happen to be asking — search, maps, or an assistant.
